Two children in the average Australian classroom have a hidden but common disability called Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
The CHI.L.D. Association, trading as Speech & Language Development Australia (SALDA), is the nation’s peak body supporting and advocating for the needs of children and young people with speech, language and related disorders.
For over 40 years our not-for-profit organisation has developed a unique, multidisciplinary approach to helping the 1 in 14 children with Developmental Language Disorder find their voice. When people have a voice their thoughts, feelings and aspirations are recognised by others. They possess the capacity to make an impact, both on their own personal situation, as well as the broader community, through their actions and words.
At Speech & Language Development Australia we operate The Glenleighden School, the only Foundation to Year 12 special school for children with speech, language and communication needs in the Southern Hemisphere. Our other expert programs include a School Support Service to reach children in regional and remote communities, professional learning and resource development for educators and health professionals, as well as research and advocacy initiatives to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn, grow….and find their voice.
Our vision is to be the leader in enabling better outcomes for children and young people with disability for whom language is their primary disorder.
By becoming a member and supporting the work of our teachers, therapists and support staff you enable better outcomes for children and young people with this hidden yet common disability.
As a member you will receive invitations to special events, be kept updated with association news and have the opportunity to attend and vote at the 2020 Annual General Meeting.
For those renewing your membership, we thank you for your ongoing commitment to our important work. Your support enabled our organisation to provide the following in 2019:
• 99 students were supported to reach their goals whilst attending The Glenleighden School.
• Our School Support Service worked with 175 schools to screen over 850 students and provide intervention to 174 students in regional and remote communities.
• We launched six educational webinars supporting educators and health professionals to understand the needs of students with DLD.
• SALDA took the opportunity to present at various conferences across Australia in 2019
to educate the public of issues pertaining to Developmental Language Disorder.
• Members of our staff engaged in exploratory research to ascertain the effectiveness of intervention on the pretend play abilities of children with Developmental Language Disorder.
We have many major projects in the pipeline for 2020, including the creation of Australia’s first Centre of Excellence for Children with DLD. Our goal is to maximise the opportunities for people with DLD through research, advocacy, training and direct support initiatives.
As the only organisation solely advocating for children and young people with DLD… we need your support more than ever. Please complete the Membership Application. We encourage you to return this to us at your earliest convenience.
